2009 Event Centre

The 2009 Cuchulainn Challenge event centre will be the Foy Centre in Carlingford. The centre is just on the outskirts of this medieval village situated in County Louth in the North East of Ireland. Louth is the smallest county in Ireland but you just won't belive how much you can pack in during a day out in the Cooley Mountains. Directions for parking on the day will be uploaded here before the event. Showers will be available after the event.


Directions

Carlingford is located midway between Belfast and Dublin the 2 major cities of Ireland.

Travelling from Dublin Airport:
(1) Start out at Dublin Airport. 
(2) At roundabout take the 2nd exit. (Signposted Way Out)
(3) At roundabout take the 2nd exit onto the M1 (signposted Dublin) 
(4) At roundabout take the 1st exit, then join the M1 motorway (signposted Balbriggan Belfast). 
(5) Toll Plaza
(6) Leave the M1 at junction 18 and then at 1st roundabout take the 4th exit.  At the next roundabout
take the 2nd exit onto the R173 which is signposted for Carlingford & Ballymascanlon.
(7)Continue forward onto the R173 until you reach Carlingford.  (approx 25 kilometres / 15 Miles )
(8)The Foy Centre is situated next to St Oliver's National School and close to St Michaels Roman Catholic Church.

Travelling from Belfast International Airport: 
Follow signs all traffic.  Killead Roundabout (Junction with A26)  At roundabout take 3rd exit A26 ( signposted Craigavon, Lisburn)   Nutt's Corner (Junction with A 52/B101).  At roundabout take 4th exit (signposted Craigavon)  (edge of) Upper Ballinderry.  Junction with M1.  At Roundabout  take 3rd exit A3 (signposted Moira, Lurgan)  Moira (post office)  Magheralin  Dollingstown  Junction with B3.  Turn Left.  Waringstown.  Junction with A50.  At T-junction turn left.  Seapatrick.  Banbridge.  Turn right (signposted Newry)  Junction with A1.  Turn right A1.  Junction with Newry bypass (Damolly Roundabout).  At roundabout take 2nd exit A2 signposted Newry, Warrenpoint)  Arrive at Newry.  follow signs for Dublin, Dundalk (A1) along A2.  Junction with B79 turn left. (Signposted Carlingford, Omeath)  In 0.6 mile bear left.  Border with Republic of Ireland.  Forward R173.  Arrive in Omeath. On arrival in Carlingford  turn right at tennis courts into village centre.  Turn left at Londis and follow one way system.   The Foy Centre is situated on Dundalk Street adjacent to St. Oliver's National School.  Estimated time from Belfast Airport is 1:30.

Teams

The event will be for teams of 4 and 2. These can be mixed gender or same gender teams.

Course
Below is the 2009 event details.

  • Approximate distances for the compulsory route.
  • 25.5km bike
  • 12.5km run/trek 
  • 7.5km kayak
  • 45.5km Total

Remember sections of the course will be bonus loops or checkpoints, these may be cut out meaning that all teams should be able to finish the course, they will also have cut-off times and if any team doesn't reach them before the cut-off they won't be allowed to do them.

  • 35.5km Bonus Total

Schedule

06:00 Saturday - Teams arrive, Registration & Issue of route instructions & maps
08:30 Saturday - Final briefing & start (The race will start at 09:00 sharp)
18:00 Saturday - Final cut off (this can be extended however remember it will be dark)
Course instructions will be issued upon registration so the sooner you arrive the sooner you can start to mark up you map. If you have enough time you'll also be given the chance to laminate your map. We will supply the laminate.


Maps

Teams will be suppiled with one map, if you wish to have more it will be up to you to buy one. The map to be used will be the Discovery Series OSI Map Sheet 36. Maps will not be laminated but teams should have time to cover maps if they arrive early enough.
